Artist’s Statement
For over 35 years, my work has been concerned with the portrayal of light, structure, color, and the specificity of place and time. Landscape, still life and interior imagery have all been a part of my repertoire.
The theme for the opening show at Brackenwood Gallery is “Reflections”. This idea can be approached in several ways. Taken at its most literal interpretation, images that are in and of themselves reflective, such as mirrors or water, come to mind. Beyond that, reflection also implies meditation and contemplation, particularly of past events. Making paintings is, for me, a method of reflecting on my life and the events in it. I consider it a very high complement when a viewer tells me that my painting brings back his or her own memories.
Most of my paintings are oil on linen. Oil paint has tremendous depth and luminosity, which particularly suits my subject matter. I start by gluing Belgian or Italian linen onto hardboard with rabbit skin glue. I then make an egg-oil emulsion rabbit skin glue gesso according to traditional recipes. The resulting painting ground is more absorbent than acrylic or oil based gessoes. I also use this gesso in the hand finishes on my frames. The frames are custom milled and I do all finishing and metal leafing of the surfaces. Recently I have revived my interest in under-painting with egg tempera and then finishing the painting in oils. I work on a clay-coated hardboard, which is very smooth. Working on a very smooth surface allows me to convey greater detail than I can on canvas. In both cases, the resulting paintings are rich in color, lush in surface, with careful attention to detail.
