Bruce Morrow
Artist’s Statement
Painting is my first love. Strong color is very prominent in my work and very important to me in expressing that outdoors feeling. I came to printing later after taking work shops and classes here in the north west and I really relate to it, the process, the multiples, the problem solving make it something I really love.
My two dimensional works usually involve a western theme in someway or another, like a western landscape or possibly a figurative piece with a cowboy or at least a western hat thrown in somewhere. I’ve noticed another influence from my other profession, carpentry; most of my images include some kind of reference to architecture or buildings.
I think this fascination with things western comes from several sources, my childhood; watching Westerns movies and Westerns on TV, and my young adulthood, when I lived in Verlarde, New Mexico for a couple of years. This is where I really fell in love with the wide-open spaces of what we think of as western landscapes. And then, there are my extensive travels in the western United States, where I have studied the hills and the roads and the people.
I like nothing better than to embark on a road trip with camera and sketch pad, snapping and sketching as the scenes role by (usually my wife is driving during these sessions) and then returning to the studio to view and review and record the trip.
