Artist’s Statement

With a focus on equine form, Julie’s style moves freely between abstract and representational, giving her horses and other contemporary figurative sculptures a unique sense of movement and emotion.

Julie Hougom has been sculpting professionally since 1989. She sculpts, makes most of her own molds, and does the majority of her own metal work [short of casting] in her studio on Whidbey Island in Washington. Her work is primarily figurative, continuously fluctuating between representational and abstract. Julie picked up a pencil as a young child, and has never stopped drawing. Her keen sense of observation and ready inspiration serve as fuel for her desire to create. Julie graduated from the Burnley School of Graphic Art in 1976. In 1989 she received a generous grant from the Arise Foundation, enabling her to study cold glass techniques at the renowned Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood Washington, and bronze casting at the Pratt School of Fine Art in Seattle.
