Kim Tinuviel

Artist’s Statement

photography • encaustics • mixed media

Kim Tinuviel’s photography and encaustics reflect the abstract textures and colors of her everyday world. She artfully orchestrates a complex interplay of cameras, computers, traditional art-making processes and found objects to create her distinct imagery, and prefers to work in three dimensions, or expand the depth of her two-dimensional work. Alternative surfaces and processes such as printing and painting on metal and stone are of particular interest. Kim’s singular artistic goal is to find the extraordinary within the ordinary.

Bio

First trained at The Juilliard School as a classical musician, Kim Tinuviel has performed professionally on stages around the world for over thirty years. A decade later, she uncovered a talent for graphic design, which soon led to photography, encaustics and mixed media as other important modes of artistic expression.

In 2008, Kim’s photographic work was first exhibited in a Whidbey Island group show called MaKiDa :: Lenses On The World. In 2011 she was featured in the Albuquerque inaugural exhibit of a national 32-artist collaborative encaustic project tour called HARMONY.

As a frequent world traveler, Kim satisfies her curiosity and collects inspiration from people and cultures far and wide. She regularly attends workshops presented by other notable artists, and considers two particular artists/mentors among her most important influences: photographer/filmmaker Sharon Shoemaker and encaustic painter Anne Smidt.

Since 1997, Kim has lived in Langley on Whidbey Island. Previous homes have included Los Angeles, New York City and in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
