Artist’s Statement

I have always loved the word “Quirky”. Growing up, it pleased me when someone said I was weird. I am lucky I found painting – it is a world where the unorthodox is valued, and I can embrace any peculiarities I choose.

When I began painting, I focused on what I thought of as mundane moments – those common and routine acts that make up such a large part of our days. Like standing at the closet picking out clothes or brushing your hair for the first time in the morning. At first I tried to portray the beautiful banality of such ordinary events. During this first year of Graduate School, however, I began to wish these moments could have a little more zing. So I mentally started dressing them up. Suddenly I was seeing fantastic colors and patterns that not only balanced each other, but also provided a counter-balance to the otherwise ordinary scene. I began to bring these visions into my painting, where I am free to create my ideal forms and worlds. The results are often quirky. And zingful.
